Edoxaban prevents blood coagulation by blocking the factor Xa Enzyme. The factor Xa enzyme is responsible for the formation of the blood clots. However, when an anticoagulant such as edoxaban is used, it will block the factor Xa Enzyme from forming the thrombin. Thrombin is a substance that is responsible for clotting the blood by sticking the blood platelets to one another. Edoxaban breaks this chain by blocking the Factor Xa Enzyme, resulting in the decreased formation of thrombin, thereby reducing blood coagulation.
It is used to treat the condition called non-valvular atrial fibrillation which is caused due to irregular heartbeats. As a result, there is a chance of the formation of blood clots in the heart which can further lead to stroke. Edoxaban which is an active oral anticoagulant when used in such conditions will reduce blood coagulation and can prevent stroke and systemic embolism.
It is also used to treat patients who suffer from the condition called deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after they have been treated with the injectable blood thinner drug for around 5-10 days. Pulmonary Embolism is a condition that occurs due to the formation of blood clots in the lungs. But when edoxaban is used it can reduce blood coagulation and prevent further severe health complications.
