APIXABAN - AN OVERVIEW OF THE APIXABAN MECHANISM OF ACTION

Apixaban is an anticoagulant that prevents the blood from clotting. It is also called factor Xa inhibitor due to its ability to inhibit the process of blood coagulation by blocking the factor Xa enzyme. It is an oral pill taken through the mouth and holds the brand name Eliquis.

Mechanism of action:

Factor Xa enzyme: The factor Xa enzyme is responsible for the formation of the substance called thrombin. Thrombin plays a vital role in binding the platelets in the blood to one another leading to the formation of blood clots. Hence, apixaban which is the direct-acting anticoagulant, will act on this Xa enzyme and prevent it from forming the thrombin thereby reducing the blood coagulation.

Apixaban is used to treat or prevent the following conditions: atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis(DVT).

Atrial fibrillation: It is a condition that is caused by irregular heart rhythms that disrupt the blood flow, leading to the formation of blood clots. Apixaban, which is a blood thinner when used in such conditions can reduce the formation of blood clotting and prevent the risks that are caused due to atrial fibrillation.

Deep vein thrombosis: It is a condition that is caused due to the formation of blood clots in the deep veins. These blood clots mainly occur in the legs, pelvis, or thighs. Apixaban when used in such conditions can obstruct the formation of blood clots in deep veins and prevent further health risks.

Pulmonary embolism: It is a condition that is caused due to the formation of blood clots in the arteries of the lungs. Apixaban is usually prescribed in such conditions to reduce blood coagulation thereby preventing damage to the lungs.

Apixaban can also be prescribed after knee or hip surgery. After the surgery, there might be a possibility of formation of blood clots. During such conditions when apixaban is used, it prevents the formation of blood clots and health complications.

Side effects and dosage :

The major side effects that occur due to the usage of apixaban are nausea, bruising, nose bleeding, haemorrhage, dizziness, headache, anaemia, discomfort, or unexpected pain or discomfort. However, the side effects associated with the usage of apixaban would vary from one person to another depending on their health conditions.

Apixaban can interact with other drugs due to which its functionality and effectiveness would change. The dosage of apixaban would depend on various factors such as the severity of the health condition, age, usage of other drugs or medications, and reaction to the first dosage. However, the dosage would vary from one person to another depending on their symptoms, and health conditions. Hence it would be beneficial to seek guidance from the healthcare practitioner before taking this drug.

Conclusion:

Apixaban has the impeccable ability to reduce the formation of blood clots inside the body and prevent further blood clotting. It is usually used in overcoming certain health conditions as discussed above: Atrial fibrillation, Deep vein thrombosis, and Pulmonary embolism. The usage of the apixaban can make the blood thinner by inhibiting the factor Xa thereby reducing the major health hazards.
